Arabic 101

I have been hearing people saying "Yalla!" All the time and I am quite sure it is not the equivilent of "Yeah lah" in the Singlish sense.. but I am so curious as to what this word means and so I asked Ace if he has learnt this phrase in arabic lessons in school...

"Yalla means hurry up or faster lah.." Ace told me.

When I asked him how he knew that and which teacher taught him that, he told me he did not learn that from school.

"Whenever I come down from the bus slowly, the bus driver will say YALLA YALLA!" Ace told me.. and that was how he deduced that Yalla means "Hurry Up"..

Turns out tat Ace is right.. I googled for the phrase and found out tat it does mean hurry up.. hahaha
