The other day was a day of pasar malam...:)
We found out over the weekend, there is going to be a Malaysian Pasar Malam at the Malaysian Consulate and were excited to go see see look look.. and true enough.. there were lots of food like kway pie tee, nasi lemak available for sale.
They even had a little table that sold asian food stuff like kway tiao, green veg, certain curry premixes.. interesting:) I was told this is a once a month thingy.. will try to come again:)

Ace got to try out some of the things we used to eat when we were kids too.. remember this ice bag thingy?:P
He can't even bite open the plastic bag lor.. wahaahahahahaah
Ace was so happy to find this kway cos he loves nonya kway:)
He claims this made him feel even more homesick:)
Curry puff!:)
After we finished eating, we contemplated going to Global Village but because we were all tired (we had finished shopping in outlet mall before we came), everyone decided to go home...
When we reached home, we realized there are many hua che (lighted vehicles) near our house and walked there to see what is it.. to our surprise, we discovered that there is a miniature version of the Global Village being set up along the creek...
But this being UAE, the event was neither widely publicized or well organised.. the rides were not all open.. and the stalls in the various "countries" all sold the SAME things. Such a pity really given that they spent so much money to do all these things and even took the effort to make miniature things to represent the various countries..
In London... Ace taking the London Bus:)
What about making the call in a red london telephone booth?:P
London bridge is falling down so Ace tried to support it!:)
Ace playing with an African Drum he found in the Africa segment..
I don't think I have to tell you what that country might be..
I think I still like looking at the beautiful boats.. Max was saying maybe we should try to do the boat dinner one night.....
Look, there is even a statue of liberty :)
One of the many repeated stalls selling a curious item.. curly potatoes. one stick of it looks like not alot right.. but it is actually ONE BIG POTATO lor:)
There were also performers walking around in stilts..
Erm.. I dunno what country this is from.. ahahaha
Ace shaking hands with the performers..
We saw a stage and it was so crowded we could barely see a thing.. Ace had to sit on Max's shoulders to see the dance...
The stage is set up strangely.. it is in this area where platforms are build on platforms... and the stage is on the highest platform.. then no chair, no bounderies and everyone crowd around the stage.. how to see? If up to me, I will build the stage at the downstream so that people behind still can see...
Taj Mahal... cos we are in "India"...
We got really bored and decided to take a rest.. Ace says we are the "white family" cos we are all in white shirts and jeans..
Then we decided to walk home.. Max being boh liao...
Playing hide and seek with his dad..
By the time we reached home, totally shagged out... Told F about the mini Global Village and she said, "Very good mah.. no fish, prawn also good.." ahahahahaha...

Hi Angel,
ReplyDeleteRead your post on SG overseas. Just out of curiosity, I've recently read this article -> http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/commentators/johann-hari/the-dark-side-of-dubai-1664368.html
What are your opinions on this piece? Did you happen to chance upon such people?
Thanks!
Hi, I read that too.. people always send me that article when they find out I am staying in Dubai..:D
ReplyDeleteCertain aspects of it is somewhat true.. that the ang mohs are paid very well and holding high paying jobs while alot of the "work" is done by their lower paid asian counterparts:)And it is true alot of people just abandon everything they had here and just went home during the crisis.. Some of my friends who have ang moh colleagues tell me these managerial level colleagues used to be plumbers back home:)
It is also true people go to jail for oweing debts.. the last i heard they doing something about tat....
But, I think that you have to keep in mind that this is sort of how an ANG MOH sees Dubai. If you talk to the locals or the other residents of dubai from different countries, you might have a very different feedback:) I know many people of different nationalities who have been here 10 years or more:) If it sucks, I don't think they will be here for this long:)
As for me, I dun think Dubai is THAT dark ;) Sure, there are some dark areas in every country.. even Singapore:) But if you want to live in a country, it isnt exactly helpful to think everyday about what is so bad about it... If you look on the bright side, I think Dubai has come a long way and I do think the shiek is quite a visionary.. given he has made this desert into the city it is today.
Sure there are things they can improved.. but hey, I think the same goes for Singapore too:)
Besides, I always think that this is other people's country, they have the right to decide how they want to run it and what they want to do.. as residents, we accept and respect their laws.. if we dun like it, we can go home.. we as "outsiders" have no right to judge or interfere in how they want things done... we can share our thoughts but ultimately it is up to them what sort of dubai they want to build and what the Shiek's vision is like.
So tat's my two cents;)
