The other day, me and Ace were chatting and he was telling me how one of is friends was feeling a little dejected recently..
For dunno what reason, the friend felt rather defeated and complained to Ace that he felt that he is a failure because he is no good in this, no good in that as he has a learning disability and it takes him lots of effort to learn things in class.
So Ace told him, "I don't agree..." And named him the things that he felt his friend was good at....
And then Ace told his friend not to say that about himself. "When we keep saying something, it will eventually come true. You don't really want to become bad in all those things, do you?"
Wahahaha... exactly how I always explained to him how he should be aware of his weaknesses but not be defeated by them or by just feeling sorry for himself and repeating that he is no good in something.
Anyway, I have been noticing that Ace has been using many very british phrases...lately..
The other day, he was trying to tell me about a great idea he has come up with and he told me, "Mummy, I have come up with an elegant solution for ...." and I was sort surprised and taken aback because I never would have expected him to use the phrase "elegant solution.."
And then the other day, we were talking about him going for Camp@Home again and about his immersion program when he was attending camp. He said he was quite afraid of the teacher he met in Pei Tong Primary School because, "She looked so fierce when she is scolding people who are not paying attention and one look at her, you think to yourself you dun want to mess with her..."
Hahahahaahahaha....

Music Challenge Time
In Ace's school, there is this thing called a Challenge Time. Every semester, during challenge time, if you are thought of as being good in a particular subject, you will get once lesson a week during challenge time on this subject as sort of an exposure to it.
I find this an interesting concept because when I first got to know of it, Ace took part in the SCIENCE challenge time and then, it was from there that his confidence in studying science and his his self perception that he is an "expert" in science started to grow his interest in science.
I think they are rotated around various subjects for different terms.
Anyway, this term, he was allocated challenge time in music and every now and then, he will come home and talk to me about what new muscial instrument he tried out during challenge time.
One session, his music teacher, Mr M, allowed them to try all the different instruments in the music room. Guess which one did Ace try?
He went for the electric guitar!:)
Even though he has been learning classical guitar for a year, he said he still found the electric guitar quite difficult. But he enjoyed himself very much:)
Then a few days ago, Ace came home and told me that his teacher Mr M told him that he is a very good musician... because apparently, that day, Mr M played a song on a xylophone once.. and then the children had to figure out how to do the song after he gives them the first and the last note.
Ace managed to figure out the song...
Another thing his teacher praised him for.. was his ability to know that he made a mistake. Apparently, his teacher says that it is important when you play music that you are aware of a mistake tat you make... some people just play through the whole song and never notice a mistake in one note or two..
And so, Ace is very proud that he is music expert also now:) hahaha..
Anyway, here are two new songs he learnt on his guitar... He played for Max and Max was so happy that he gave Ace permission to buy two trashies (they are this toy called Trash Packs).
After so long of not seeing much improvement, finally he can play some songs that that I can sing! ;)
Enjoy!:)
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
German Folk Song
Now I am just thinking how I can continue to give him chance to practise the guitar when we are back in sgp for holiday for two months..

Trash Packs Crazy!
Ace is into a new "trend"....
That trend is called the Trash Packs.
About a year ago, he came home from school one day and kept talking about this toy called the Trash Pack. He kept saying that they are very cool and that all of his friends have them and that he wants to buy some and asked if we could buy some for him.

For the benefit of those who do not know wat trash packs are, they are just little rubber monsters the size of an adult thumb and they come in various series. They act as a collectable series and also can be used to play games like shooting down your opponent's "trashies" the way we shoot goli (marbles) when we were young.
As you can see, there is almost ZERO educational value in this toy. To me, it is a boh liao toy and total waste of money to buy them and so I said no.
But Ace's godma Annie gave him a red packet and said if he did well in his tests or exams, he will be allowed to use it to buy something he likes.
So that particular semester, Ace did a chinese test I gave him and to my surprise scored like 75 marks... the benchmark I set for him in order to get permission to use his red packet money.
And so, he went out and purchased a set of 5 trashies from the series 1.
He was not allowed to bring toys to school. He played with it like 3 times in the next year and then dunno where he put lah. Out of sight, out of mind. Maybe it is not fun to play with it alone at home or with me or max cos we dun really know the rules.. hahahaha...
Some time at the start of the Autumn Term this year, he decided that Parent's Rules are all meant to be overthrown and that you could just ignore what your parents say and as long as you teh siao, you could do what you wanted... (Read about how he lost his Gshock watch because of that here)
And so, he started bringing all sorts of things to school even though we said not to. When we found out. We told him he has to be responsible for his own toys then because we are not going to buy him new ones as replacement when that happens.
There was a sudden revival of the trash packs in school and suddenly, he remembered that he had them as well and he searched for them and packed them into a bag and brought them to school.
And over time, he has been playing with them every day. His collection of 5 grew slowly... and everyday he will come back and report about which new trashie he has traded for. Over the next few months, his trashie collection grew from 5-14!
And how did he grow his collection?
You see, they do trading and I dunno how... but sometimes people trade two lower end ones from an older series for a newer one.. and he trades.. so he changes one for two. Sometimes his friends have too many and want to give him one or two... Sometimes, his friends want to give someone else and someone else say it is no good and doesnt want it and he just conveniently ask, "Then can you give to me?" wahahahaa.... Only one time he won one playing the shooting game. He usually only play friendly matches where you dun lose the trashie because he is afraid of losing his.
Because of that, he is so crazy about them and everyday, he has been bugging us to buy him new trashies from the latest series 5.
Around that time, we started implementing the do your own chores to earn money for your own toys thing and so, he worked hard at his chores and finally saved up enough money to buy a pack of 2 new trashies... hahaahhaah..
Now he says he wishes that everyone will give him trashies for his birthday. I wish not though cos I still think it is a useless toy and that 16 trashies IS ENOUGH:) wahahahaha...
But he has been working hard at work to change my mind by randomly and nonchalantly engaging me in discussions about why Trashies are great learning toys....
According to Ace, trashies help you in MATH (you have to count them) and also SCIENCE (you have to use your knowledge in science to make a decision about how to shoot and which one to use to shoot the other trashie down..)
Hahaha.. like tat also can???

Doing Homework In A Cafe!
Max had some sort of meeting... and it being a thursday (which is the start of weekend), me and Ace decided to tag along..
But since it was a meeting, we were not supposed to join in mah ;)
so me and Ace went to another restaurant, ordered some food and DID HOMEWORK THERE while waiting for Max!:) wahahahahaah...
Ace's very sian look that he had to do homework:)
The cafe hor is called 77 Veggies... looked quite nice...
I was thinking next time can come back again..
BUT leh, turned out that the food was lousy and the service even more so... The waitress did not understand their menu. Asked questions all dun understand.. serve food also never bring cutlery and have to ask for it..
PLUS.. so ex lor... we ordered an order of spring roll and one drink each. almost sing $30. I think we will NEVER EVER EVER go back again... Bleah....
When we went back to our car, we saw that famous LJ HOOKER car beside us.. wahahahaha.. so funny you know... And I think only Singaporeans will find it funny...
But it is just a australian property company lah.. and that is the name based on the initials of the owner:) wahahaha..
While we are on the topic of homework... here is another of Ace's famous chinese homework jokes:) wahahahaah...
For those who do not understand chinese.. the homework asked yo to fill in the blanks and write two sentences about yourself at two ages you choose.
Ace chose to draw and write about himself when he was one years old and his current.
Under one years old, the sentence he wrote is:
I am small, I eat and play
Under present, he wrote
I am very water
I am very good
Hahahahaahahhaha... HE had wanted to write I am very HANDSOME but instead wrote the word "WATER" becos he forgot how to write the chinese word for HANDSOME:) wahahaha

Support My Dad
Ace was rather intrigued when I showed a stop animation youtube video done by this 6 year old kid based on one of Ace's favourite videos called Dumb Ways To Die...
He was intrigued by stop animation because of that and kept bugging me to download the software cos he said he wanted to do it too.
So I suggested that he make one to support his daddy in that case. And so, me and Ace got together and made the above stop animation movie together:) (PS: It took us a few days to make this.. the sian sian voice part is cos Ace was sick.. but we still wanted to complete it..)
In case you want a run down of the video.. here is wat it is about lah...
Max and some of his colleagues are going to take part in this thing called the 3 Peaks Challenge. It is a challenge where you had to climb 3 mountains in 24 hours.. so it is no mean feat.. and Max has been training hard because i think it is going to be quite cold and will require lots of stamina.
And they are doing that to raise funds for Sailors' Society
Sailors' Society is a society that provides welfare for down and out or less fortunate seafarers and their families.
The funds they raise actually go into providing communication between seafarers and their families, provide funerals and coffins if sailors die out at sea far away from home, provide funds so they can visit sailors who are in jail or in hospital due to injuries or sickness..
And being an ex-navy wife. I really appreciate what these people are doing for seafarers. I mean, Max used to be from the Navy.. it is tie fan wan (iron rice bowl).. and he is well taken care of by all the schemes they have in place to protect them.. and Max rarely sailed longer than 2 weeks... and even so, I worry much for Max whenever he is away. I can only imagine how much worse it must be for the wives and children who have to endure their father or husbands being away for a few months each year.
Living overseas also made me understand how sometimes one can be really helpless when you are in a foreign land and not much resources to garner help when it is needed. So I really think the guys at Sailors' Society are doing excellent work.
Anyway, using the funds they have raised, here are some of the things they have done..
- Help 376,200 seafarers worldwide
- Transport 21,600 seafarers
- Visit 233 seafarers in hospital
- Visit 305 retired or injured seafarers at home
- Make 569 welfare grants
- Distribute 8,187 international news sheets
If you decide not to donate, that is no problem at all. Please send your blessings to his team that they complete the challenge safe and sound.
On behalf of the seafarers and the sailors's society, thank you for your donations!:) And on behalf of Max and his colleagues, thank you for your blessings!:)
If you will like more info, you can email Max at maxchaush@hotmail.com
PS: Anyway, pardon our rather badly made stop animation. It is really more of an experiment for us as we dun really know how to use the app fully yet.

Chiku Juice In Dubai?!
I have been living in this area every since I came to Dubai and we have often driven past this "juice centre" near our place.
Here in Dubai, juice centers are very common. THey are small little shops tat sells small items like juices, pizzas, sandwhiches, burgers and even desserts like the various fruit creams. It apparently it is an indian thing and I am not quite sure if there is an equivilent in Singapore..
Anyway, one of my friends told me that this juice center has the BEST CHIKU JUICE EVER... and I was so surprised!
I dun even see chikus in the supermarket and never thought of them as common or easily available...
WHat is more, my friend lived in Sharjah.. which is another state.. I live here.. 5 min walk away.. and I did not know they had such 好料! Hahahaha
THe other day, because we were feeling little bit full, we decide we will just walk over for juices and snack for dinner...
I ordered the 传说中的chiku juice and max ordered sugarcane juice... BOTH were very yummy!:)
Reminded me of the nice food we had during our Oman Trip...
Ace ordered a normal burger and I ordered a sechwan burger cos i was curious...
Actually it just means they put some sort of chili sauce inside..
Glad we decided to eat there cos the food was good.. but also cos it was difficult to drive in and out the area that weekend and since this juice center was nearby, we could walk there...
Eygpt having an election and there were sooooo many people and cars coming into the area.. some people brought umbrellas and even chairs! Wahahaha.... just to let you have a view of the crowd lor... this is only maybe 40% of the number of queuing to go in and vote.. i never knew there were so may eygptians in the UAE..
At some point they were even playing music and I tot they were celebrating a win or wat...
Pity them that the queue was so long and snow moving and never seem to let up... plus it was freaking hot that day...

Forward Roll Finally!
Do children grow in spurts?
They probably do...
Suddenly many of Ace's learning challenges that have held him back since YEAR 2 are overcomed THIS WEEK!
For example, they have this thing in their school called the BIG MATH. Big Math is like a very short Math Quiz. If you get 10 out of 10 consecutively for 3 weeks, you will be promoted to the next level..
Since Year 2 (he is in Year 4 now), he has been getting 10/10 once or twice in the whole term. The rest of the time, he always only scores a 7 or a 8. Sometimes it is careless mistake.. sometimes it is cos he doesnt know how to do something.
Apparently, he says he was having problem with a particular type of sum in his level because he did not understand it. No matter how the teacher explained. And then, one fine day, he got it! And then for the past three weeks, he has been scoring 10/10 and so, he has officially been promoted up one level for Big Math..
And then came swimming...
Since year 2, his teacher has always asked us to send him for extra swim lessons. We actually did so for the first two years but this year, because of some cock up, we did not sign him up for any. Initially in the first term, his teacher still sent me a letter to request that he be sent to extra swim lessons...
We halfheartedly looked for a new swim school but it did not happen and before we know it.. already half the autumn term is gone and that means like last day of sch only few weeks away right.. and we were just saying how come this two terms we did not get a letter for Ace to attend extra lessons. Did the teacher give up liao.. or did Ace improve:) wahahaha..
Today, Ace came home and told me that he is promoted two levels for his swimming.
Swimming they are divided into five levels. Worst ones in level 1, and then you move up in the numbers as you get better... Level 5 being the top level.
Since year 2, Ace has been stuck in level 1... and even after we spent so much money on his extra swim lessons, also no improvement leh.. he still stuck there.
Today, he same he is promoted direct to level 3. Turns out that, he was stuck in Level 1 because he did not fulfill ONE criteria-- that is to do a forward roll.
Today, he finally did two in a row and so he got promoted to level 3 because he already fulfilled all the other criteria!;)
I asked him why he was unable to do it and he said somehow, no matter how his teacher explained, he does not really understand how to do it. PLUS, she asked him to hold his breath and do it and holding his breath while rolling forward in a full circle made him queasy he said...
Today, his friend suggested that he breath out through his nose when he does that... and for some strange reason, he is able to roll forward when he breathes out through his nose!
And so, our good friend just got promoted like tat...

I Am Going To Be Happy Everyday
Sometimes my son is super boh liao...
He will wear boh liao stuff.. or make boh liao pose and ask me to take picture to post on his blog:) wahahahahah...
The other day, he skipped over to me and delcared loudly to me, "Mummy, from now on, I am going to be happy everyday!"
I asked him what made him delcare this... and he said, "You told me that time passes faster when we are happy.. and I think it is true.. my birthday is one month away.. if I am happy everyday, then very fast it will be my birthday!"
Wahahahahahaha... this kind of logic also can:) wahahaha... But he is not wrong.. since his life is based on HIS perception:) I just hope he remembers this the next time he is throwing a tantrum:)
Talking about tantrums... the other day, early morning he did something wrong and so I scolded him. That day, he went off to school sulking without our usual morning hug cos he was upset and did not want to hug me.
When he came home from school, he told me that he was sorry. Because we did not hug in the morning, he was short of hug hug energy. So while he was in school, he had to put something soft (his bag) around his water bottle and hug it and pretend that it was me... so that he can feel better...
Wahahahaaha!:) A huggy kissy monster indeed! Serves him right lah:) wahahahahaha....
I asked him what does he do if he is short of hug hug energy and I am not in school? "I hug myself lor.. and then wait till I come back and quickly hug you to make up for it.."
I then asked him.. one day if I die, then how? "Then I hug daddy.."
"What if me and daddy die also?"
He replied with a shy smile... "Then I hug my girlfriend...."
Wahahahahaha

Ace Writes A Poem
Ace was asked to write a poem about either Friendship, Love or Peace.. it was for a presentation during a party...
To my surprise, he wrote a pretty insightful and enlightened piece:) Hahahaha....
Even draw pictures for it.. this is LOVE... me and max having romantic dinner:)
This is FRIENDSHIP...
And this is PEACE.. chanting!:) wahahahahahahahah
During the party, it was agreed that all who attend will write down their goal or determination for the year and they will all send it to Ikeda Sensei...
Ace's goal was to COMPLETE HIS HOMEWORK IN TIME:) wahahahaha..
The funniest part is that he even added that his grandma is a district leader:) wahahaha... so hao lian.. :) But I really like the picture he drew... it is the budstudan in Popo's house:)
PS:
On a totally unrelated note, Ace went to Mac Donald and got this Spiderman Car with lights... he was so fascinated with the lights... I was just teasing him.. telling him that he is already going to be 9 years old soon.. shouldnt still be playing with this sort of little boy toys...
Who knows a few hours later, when Ace was asleep liao.. Max came home and played with this toy car and said it is very cool cos it got lights.. turn on and turn off the lights.. pose here pose there.. roll here roll there... everytime we saw a Spiderman toy car after tat, he will even say, "I think the one in our house is better.."
Alamak, I think the 38 year old worse than the 9 year old!:) wahahahah... Seems like I have to LITTLE BOYS at home!:) wahahaha...

Curry Galore!
As you know, every now and then, Ace goes through a new "food phase" where he will want to eat that particular food non stop.
Save for a few things such as mac donalds and chee cheong fun.. everything else will go through this phase:)
His current phase, me and Max are SUPER HAPPY to announce is CURRY!!!!!:)
We have been going to this Indonesian restaurant rather frequently and Ace always says that the food there is too spicy and he will end up eating fried noodles.
One day, he suddenly said he very sick of eating noodles.. so we asked if he would like to eat rice with curry, toufu and vegetables... and he said he will like to try...
After eating, to our surprise, he declared, "这里的咖喱很香!" (the curry tastes very good)
Hahahahaha... so impressed till he even used mandarin to describe it leh!
After that, his attitude towards the Indonesian restaurant took a 360 degrees turnabout!
Usually it will take 10 min of persuasion before Ace will be willing to go there but after this, whenever we say we wenat to go and eat 很香的咖喱, Ace will shout "Hooray!" and jump around the house in joy:) wahahahaha...
Sometimes, we sian already right, and we go another restaurant to eat.. we will order a curry as well but the verdict is always... "No, this is not as nice as "很香的咖喱""
Anyway, me and Max are going to enjoy this phase while it lasts!:)

It's Mothers' Day and Ace said he will make me a present...
First he made this.. can you decode what it is saying? ;)|
Then he made this heart flower with buildings...
And then while he was packing his shelf, he said he will also give me this for Mothers's Day. When I complained that he is recycling the stuff he recieved from Camp@Home, he replied, "At least this one is useful mah!" Wahahahahaha
He made another one for me.. coded message... Max said it is I LOVE U but Ace says no.. it is I LOVE MUM wahahahaaha....
Then he also made a money sign chain for himself.. wahahaha...
Max also brought home a bouquet of flowers for me:)
No fancy celebrations but still happy lah :)

Annie
Ace has been coming home and singing songs from Annie lately.
You know.. that famous movie and musical, Annie? The one that goes, "Tomorrow, tomorrow.. I love you.. tomorrow.. you're only a day away........."
Well, at any rate, that is the only song I know from the movie even though I have one watched half of it on tv in Dubai.
The reason being that his school is putting up a school production and the Year 4s have been chosen to be the accompanying choir. So he was quite serious about practising at home and all that and even made me download the youtube video to watch and practice.
But to my surprise, Tomorrow is not his favourite song wor... his favourite song he says is a catchy song called Hard Knock Life.
As I had guests in town and there was some last min change of plans, we dropped Ace off and I went to meet my guests. WHen I was done, thankfully, one of my friends sent me to school and I managed to catch the last part of the production.
I am always in awe during the production because these children are no more than 12 and they can sing, dance and do all sorts of amazing things!;) Some more the songs are all not easy to learn lor.. the tunes are quite difficult.
Anyway, here are the two videos of Ace's two fav songs...
Hard Knock Life: Ace's fav song in the production ;)
Anyway, If you look carefully, when i turn the phone to the right, there is a head with a light underneath it.. that is Ace and the ipad he was given to ensure they dun mess up the lyrics:) wahahaha...
Tomorrow: Ace's second fav song in the production:)
PS: they are blurry and cannot see face because firstly I did not set the exposure before i started to capture the video and secondly.. also i think for the best since Ace always says that the other parents are upset I feature their children online without their permission when i take video of any of their performances... strangely, they almost NEVER come direct to me to tell me.. but it is always their children grumbling to Ace...and so Ace grumble to me... and makes me mad
Anyway, I think Ace over reacting also lah.. I have a policy to protect the children also one okie.. i tell Ace... Number one, I dun tag the children. I dun even know which face goes to which name except those Ace are very close to. And if I do mention anyone at school, I dun use a naming convention that will easily be linked to them. Eg, Max is not M and Angel is not A.. could be any alphabet i fancy at that time.
Number 2, I of cos will not tag full name (Ace said someone complained i tagged his full name.. really? I din even know wat his surname was UNTIL Ace told me when he complained..) Like I said.. wah lau, you really think I bother to go and memorize all the names in the class list by surnames?
Number 3: Usually photo or video taken from a distance lah.. cannot really tell who is who one...It is not HD video quality lor.. besides, my real purpose is just to share with my family and friends at home what Ace is doing in school..
So anyway, now I just dun tag the videos so they wun show up when the children type school name and dun name the school... hehe..
PS: These two months so many pple come Dubai:) Hahaha... Have few sets of friends visiting.. too bad most of them are here for work or stopover only :)

Something New For The House!
As our coffee table had a shaky leg, we decided that we will invest in a slightly bigger one so that we can eat together at the table...
It always feels nice to buy something new for the house :) And just in time too because we have guests coming and they can eat with us too:) wahahaha
Ace was all excited to help fix the whole thing up... seems like he is quite a handyman like his dad:)
On a a totally unrelated note, I have been going to school to pick Ace lately on Sundays because our carpool buddy has got cricket practice during those days... too bad for Ace also that he did not get into the team..
Bah, I wish I didn't have to do this during this time of the year.. Thank goodness if Max is free, he will come fetch me and we will do the fetching together after lunch.
The other day, while we were on our way to fetch Ace, we saw a car behind us that was sooooooo flashy lor!
It's a lambo... pardon the dirty side mirror.. we were hit by a spray of water that did not dry well and I was taking the photo through the dirty window....
Anyway, this lambo is bright green.. and like the cars we see in PIMP MY RIDE, it also has Gold colour GOLD DUST mixed into the paint and so when it was right behind us, u can see the gold dust sparkling in the sun!
Too bad cannot see that effect in this picture...
Notice that reflection at the front portion? That is actually reflection of the gold flaks...
From far dun look so nice lah...
But.. nice car lah :) Hahahaaha... Happy colour too:) I know my friend JY will LOVE THIS CAR cos this is her lucky colour!:) hahahaha...

Ryo Sushi AGAIN!
Went to Ryo Sushi again... and as usual, Max made me pose with a pic of a beer just to make it look like I am the one drinking instead of him!:)
Ace loved the deep fried lotus root.. was really yummy!:)
Ace posing with the beer because we ordered this special beer that has ice flakes in them and they were running a promo.. if you scissors paper stone and win, you get a free beer!:) Ace lost one and won one:)
Tempura...
Ace wanted to eat the deep fried mushrooms but was too hot lor:) wahahaha
So he kept his mouth open like this for a minute:) wahahaha
These two photos above come with a STORY...
Everyone knows Max drinks alot and anyone who has been at a party with me will have heard one or two of Max's DRUNKEN stories where he is the HERO and I am the POOR GIRL who has to clean things up...
The thing is Ace knows his dad likes to drink but has never really has a chance to see his dad drunk.
The other day, Max went to watch his fav LP match and started drinking from 4pm.... he reached home at 9 plus and so that means he has been drinking for 4 hours. When he reached home, he was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO DRUNK that he went to sleep immediately while still wearing his work clothes.
I am already Max's wife long enough to see tell tale signs of his drunkenesss and there are a few things you can use to measure how drunk he is.. for eg, whehter he goes to bed.. whether he will cook and is hungry.. whether he will say funny things... whether he does things out of ordinary and quite simply, whether he can walk in a straight line... Usually I have a pretty good guage of how drunk he is based on that..
Anyway, because it is not Max's usual style to go straight to bed without a bath, I figure he is quite drunk.. so I told his son to let him sleep and dun wake him when he came to report to me that his dad is sleeping and hasnt changed out of his clothes...
After about half an hour, I asked Ace to wake his dad and ask him to go and bath first...
And when his dad woke, he did this pose to his son...
You will think bath liao will be better right?
No, bath liao come out, when his son asked him if he is drunk, he do this sign again to his son....
Best part is.. next day he cannot remember it at all till me and Ace told him about it. Ace was quite tickled that his dad is so cartoon when drunk though and kept talking about this and laughing at his dad...
THat is Ace celebrating his win of ONE FREE beer:) wahahaha..
PS: We made reservations rather late and Chef said there wasnt enough time or things to prepare a proper meal and he kept apologizing to Max later that the food was not up to standard. I must say that it does fall short of the usual mark but well, I think all Ace needs are some inari and tamago sushi and we are good to go:) Hahaha...
